Live Oak United Methodist Church "6th Annual Jambalaya/Pastalaya Benefit" For Women Outreaching Women
The Wesley Sunday School Class from Live Oak United Methodist Church in Watson held its "6th Annual Jambalaya/Pastalaya Benefit" for Women Outreaching Women Saturday May 2nd. Every year they reach out to the community to support the Emergency Shelter in Livingston Parish for women and their children who are forced to flee their homes because of domestic violence. They had a home, but it is no longer safe for them to go there.
For the past 4 months the Wesley Sunday School Class gave up their Saturdays and free time to solicit donations for the food, bags, Styrofoam dinner plates, plastic silverware, and sold advance dinner tickets. They also solicited donations to provide meals for those who cannot afford to buy their own and for some who are on a fixed income and/or homebound.
On the big day, the cooks were up at 5:30 a.m. stirring their pots. Others were setting up tables and preparing for the assembly line. By 10:30 a.m. they were dishing up the food and bagging it to fill the orders. Girl Scout Troop 205 showed up with 5 helpers to dish up food too. Now there were people from age 10 to age 80+ years, all of one purpose.
Mrs. Beverly Thames, member of the Wesley Sunday School Class, said, "Look around at all the people who are helping. It's not just Methodists. There are Catholics, Baptists and other denominations who have pitched in too. The Lord has put it upon their hearts to care about families who become homeless because of abuse."
The Denham Springs Garden Club had a table set up with a variety of plants and some bird houses. They donated some plants to Women Outreaching Women to beautify the shelter.
"We are truly blessed to know such wonderful people. The proceeds will go towards the operation of the shelter." said Mona Mistric, Executive Director.
